One reason universal health care is a horrible idea - aside from the costs and resulting tax burden to keep it running - is that it shifts the cost of personal irresponsibility to the taxpayers. If a person's two-pack-a-day smoking habit causes him to contract emphysema, the taxpayers pick up the tab for his treatment. If too many people contract emphysema, the government has to raise taxes to cover the costs. Of course, smoking is but one type of risky behavior.

If Kenneth Stokes knows what is good for him, he will get behind President Bush's call to lift the ban on offshore drilling.

For those not familiar with the politics of Jackson, Mississippi, Stokes is a member of the city council. He is an ultra-liberal African-American Democrat in the same mold as Jessie Jackson, Al Sharpton, and Maxine Waters. His ward is poor, urban and almost entirely African-American. I single Stokes out because I am familiar with his politics, but every city has at least one Kenneth Stokes.

For all the talk about how McCain is having trouble energizing his base, Barack Obama is having problems of his own. Here is a list of Democrats who have been slow to warm up to the Democratic nominee.

The environmental wackos at ABC News are working overtime. Today, the network announced that this fall - just in time for the election - it will air a 2-hour broadcast discussing how the world will end by the end of this century if we do not change our ways.

Are we living in the last century of our civilization? Is it possible that all of our technology, knowledge and wealth cannot save us from ourselves? Could our society actually be heading towards collapse?

In the past I have been critical of the Republican party for not standing up for conservative principles. Today, however, I must give Senate Republicans credit where it is due. By defeating the oil windfall profits tax and the Warner-Lieberman "cap and trade" tax, Republicans have saved the American people even more pain at the pump.

As of today there is a better than 50-50 chance that a peace-at-any-cost, America-hating leftist will be elected the next President of the United States. This raises a critical question: how did we get here? Rocco DiPippo at the American Thinker has an excellent piece that answers this question.

While the post is a scathing indictment of the left, it also directs some well-deserved criticism at President Bush and the Republicans. It is a lengthy post, but well worth it.

Saturday Barack Obama resigned his membership from Trinity United Church. I expect the mainstream press will talk about what a brave and difficult decision this was for Obama. If they do, it would be just hogwash. No reasonable person can conclude that Obama's decision was motivated by anything but political expediency.

For the first two months of this blog's existence, the tagline has been "Spearheading the search for the GOP's backbone." After about 50 Republicans voted to override President Bush's veto of the Farm Bill, the search has been called off. It is obvious that the GOP has no backbone or, if it does, it only uses it aid and abet the Democrats' pursuit of liberalism.
